THE OLD MILL

Dating back to the 1800s, the mill is located in a majestic, enclosed area and comprises a main building with an irregular shape that follows the shape of the land, and two small single-story buildings with tuff masonry and light metal roofing. The main building is divided into areas with 1, 2, 3, and 4 floors. The walls are load-bearing masonry made of calcarenite (tuff) blocks approximately 80 cm thick. The floors are made of beams and bricks in the office area (building tangent to Via C. Battisti); with solid brick barrel vaults supported by reinforced concrete beams at the rear; with iron beams supported by reinforced concrete pillars and supporting wooden beams and planks in the three-story building. The roof is partly terraced and partly gabled, with mixed iron and wood trusses.

LABORATORY FOR THE RECOVERY OF FARMING TRADITIONS IL VECCHIO MULINO

The project stems from a desire to immerse oneself in the traditions and customs of our farming grandparents and great-grandparents, putting oneself to the test by reliving the atmosphere and daily life of times gone by within the walls of the old mill.

The aim of this workshop is to convey the importance of healthy lifestyles and the promotion of local food traditions.

How did people once live in the countryside? Where did farming families live? Let’s enter our Old Mill together, discover the stories that its objects tell, and imagine the life and rhythms of a bygone era.

Upon your arrival, you will be welcomed by the staff of “Il Vecchio Mulino” dressed in traditional farming attire, who will immerse you in the atmosphere.

The activities are suitable for all ages and will take place inside this cozy country house, where you will be transported through ancient and authentic culinary, musical, and visual traditions, retracing local traditions and reconstructing and evoking the rhythms and experiences of peasant life.

Traditional dances and musical and theatrical performances related to tradition will be held in collaboration with local associations, aimed at a limited audience.

Here, you can not only spend a day savoring the flavors of the past and immersing yourself in memories, but also enjoy a 360° experience, staying overnight in the workshop itself, in a room completely furnished in an antique, rustic style. In the morning, you can experience waking up in a warm grandmother’s house where you can enjoy a breakfast prepared with your own hands during the previous workshops.

The revival of ancient rural traditions focuses on some fundamental themes such as seasonality, waiting times, biodiversity, sustainability, and self-production. In fact, the transformation of horticultural products into products for consumption, from tomato sauces to preserves and herbal teas, teaches the art of working together, collaboration, and the importance of inclusion.

There will also be events open to the local community where everyone can learn about the origins and transformations of the vegetables that end up on our tables. Through horticulture
